LG Chocolate Touch

The LG Chocolate Touch is carrying on in the Chocolate tradition with it's sleek style and is a solid new option for those who are not yet ready to commit to the smartphone life and monthly access charges.

It has a very slim, pocket-friendly design and is also comparatively lightweight. It measures 4.3 by 2.2 by .5 inches. It has some funky rubberized shapes on the back that make it easier to hold and contribute to its overall stylish appeal.

The touch display is similar to the LG Vu and the LG Dare. It's a 3.0 inch very responsive, beautiful touchscreen.

One of the main things the Chocolate cell phones are known for is their quality as a music phone, and this one is no exception. It connects to Rhapsody for syncing with PCs and buying music. It comes with 1GB of internal memory and a microSD card slot so you can add more. It also features a Dolby Music equalizer and an FM radio. One fun "extra" is the "Join the Band" feature which gives you either a virtual drum kit or a scrolling 88-key keyboard to play along with your tunes.

Verizon phones are known for there call quality and the LG Chocolate leads the pack in this area. Call quality is simply excellent.

Nokia Charger Recall

Nokia announced a recall on about 14 million phone chargers due to a possible risk of electric shock. The danger comes when their plastic covers become loose and exposing the electrical components. The flaw was caught during a routine quality inspection. Presently there have been no reports of injury from these chargers.

All four models in question are made by BYD Electronic Company of China, but bear the Nokia brand. They are: models AC-3E and AC-3U, manufactured between June 15 and Aug. 9 this year; and AC-4U, manufactured between April 13 and Oct. 25, 2009.

If you think you may have one of these chargers, check the label on your charger. On it you will find the model number as well as the manufacturer. If you do have one of the BYD model numbers, you will then need the identification number, which is the very long number found near or at the bottom of the label.

You can then go to Nokia's charger exchange Website and input all of the charger information. You will be walked through the steps necessary to exchange your charger. Nokia also has a toll-free number (1-888-Nokia2U) if you'd prefer to call to facilitate your exchange.

Samsung Moment - Worth a Second Glance

There has been a great deal of attention given to the release of the Motorola Droid with Verizon, but there are other companies also embracing the Android OS. Check out Samsung's latest prize, the Moment with Sprint.

The smartphone market has become pretty intense as all the little guys try to compete with the iPhone. The result is capitalism at it's fines
t ... consumers are getting better choices. The Samsung Moment is one of those "better choices."

One feature that gives this device some bragging rights is the 800MHz ARM11 core. What exactly does this mean? It means it's fast ... quite possibly the fastest out there right now. For some of us, just having speed is enough, but there is plenty more to write
home about with this cell phone.

The beautiful AM-OLED display will catch your eye immediately. What exactly is AM-OLED? Try as I might, I can't summarize the technical defnition, so here is what I found from mobileburn.com:

AMOLED, which stands for Active Matrix OLED, is a hybrid display technology that pairs the active matrix backplane from a traditional TFT display with an OLED display. As a result of their active matrix natures, AMOLED displays have faster pixel switching response times than do traditional OLED displays, which are prone to ghosting when displaying fast moving animations.

My non-technical summary of the AM-OLED display .... The AM-OLED display makes you utter an involuntary "wow" when you first behold it.

There are two other features that set the Samsung Moment apart. First is the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Simply having one on a smartphone is unusual, but also
unusual is the layout. It takes a little getting used to but it mimcs a computer keyboard quite nicely. Second ... and lastly, is the call quality. It is virtually unsurpassed. Not only can you hear from across the room if the volume is turned up, but the quality of the calls will give the impression that you are on a landline.

As to the rest of the story, it's much the same as other mobile devices. Camera, music, video, GPS .. it's all there.

Zong+ - Buying Online Made Easier

How many times have you been online and wanted to buy something but didn't want to go through the time and trouble of finding your credit card and entering all the information in ... complete with the three numbers on the back of the card. Maybe you have become leery about using credit cards online. For whatever reason, someone in cyber space lost a potential customer.

What if you could simply enter your cell phone number, wait for a text with an authorizing PIN to insure that it's really you making the purchase, and then complete that puchase just by enter that PIN? You now can with a company called Zong.

You have been able to buy virtual things this way for a while now, but the charge would get added on to your cell phone bill. The downside to this has been that the carrier, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, etc... - would add a charge and and the time it took for the merchants to get their money was fairly long. This was not ideal for the seller or the buyer.

Zong, a company that operates a "mobile-to-carrier" payment service, has recently launched Zong+ which will allow you to link a credit, debit, or prepaid card to your Zong account. Online shopping becomes easier and interestingly more secure as each transaction is given a unique PIN.

It will be interesting to see if the mobile payment idea catches on. It certainly is convenient and would create more conversions for internet businesses, because it will be so much easier for consumers to buy on impulse!

Droid vs. iPhone, Verizon vs. AT&T

There has been a great deal of hype surrounding the launch of the Motorola Droid this past weekend. Billed as a threat to the iPhone, this smartphone was expected to draw crowds at Verizon stores around the country upon its release. Okay, no one who seriously pays attention to the cell phone industry honestly thought there would be lines like were seen with the introduction of the iPhone last summer. In fact, no one really knew what to expect..

Compared to the the million plus iPhone 3GS models that were sold the weekend of its release, a mere 100,000 Droids sold on its first weekend would not on the surface appear to be success, but it actually is quite an impressive beginning. All indications are that sales will continue to hold steady.

One factor that looks like will help is, ironically, the lawsuit that AT&T recently filed against Verizon and the marketing campaign they are using which highlights the poor 3G service AT&T customers are all too familiar with. The campaign itself has drawn attention, but the lawsuit is serving so far only to intensify that attention. Verizon's not worried, they have stayed on course with the tone of their marketing.
Whether iPhone users will cross the battle lines and embrace the Droid remains to be seen. It will be interesting to see how things unfold.

Smartphone - They're All the Rage

I was reading an article this morning from the San Fransico Chronicle. Ryan Gates writes,

"... the rise of the smart phone is reordering the way people compute, allowing people to tackle tasks like e-mailing, document viewing, social networking and light browsing from their handheld. In the process, it's lessening some of the need for a laptop or desktop, both in the workplace and at home."
Anyone who owns a smartphone knows this to be true. When a person gets their first smartphone, they have no idea how much it will change their life, and within a week they wonder how they got along without one. The invention of cell phones changed everything in that you could always feel connected because you could call your friends or family at anytime (my kids still can't wrap their mind around the concept that there was a time when you couldn't make a call from your car). In the same way, BlackBerrys, Palms, and iPhones have now allowed us to remained connected in a much more significant way. Whether it's, work emails, facebook, or GPS ... we are connected.

Perhaps you have not yet jumped on this bandwagon. Perhaps it all seems too indimidating. Remember how intimidating the internet once seemed? Consider joining the growing number of mobile web users.
